That is exactly why so many travellers choose Namibia as their first destination in Africa. Few countries combine spectacular landscapes, excellent tourism infrastructure and relaxed travel quite so naturally. At the same time, the same questions often come up: Is self-driving really that straightforward? Which route makes sense? How much time should you allow? And how do you create a journey that feels impressive without becoming overwhelming?
Here is my answer: this journey.

My personal recommendation
If this is your first journey to Namibia, there is one region I particularly want to draw your attention to: Damaraland.
Many classic itineraries simply drive through it or leave it out altogether. For me, it is one of Namibia’s most impressive landscapes. The vastness, the silence, the spectacular sunsets and, with a little luck, an encounter with the desert-adapted elephants make this part of the journey truly special.
If you have a little more time, I would add two further regions to this journey. An additional stage in the Kalahari is a wonderful introduction to Namibia and shows a completely different character to the Namib Desert. After Damaraland, it is also worth detouring into the still relatively unknown west of Etosha National Park – a region that adds another dimension to the safari experience.

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei as an iconic introduction to the journey.
Deadvlei is Namibia’s most famous postcard image and, for many travellers, one of the most impressive places on the entire journey. Together with your guide, you explore the spectacular heart of the Namib Desert.
Between dunes rising up to 300 metres, ancient camel thorn trees and the extraordinary silence of the Namib, it quickly becomes clear why this place becomes one of the most unforgettable moments of a Namibia journey.
Did you know?
Sossusvlei is a dry salt-and-clay pan that marks the end of the Tsauchab River – yet even in rainy years the river rarely carries water this far. Deadvlei remains dry even then, surrounded by some of the world’s highest dunes, which you can climb yourself.
Boat tour, seals, pelicans and enormous dunes right beside the ocean.
Along the coast around Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, you discover the perfect contrast to Namibia’s desert interior. A change of perspective: on a boat tour you encounter seals, pelicans and, with a little luck, even dolphins or whales. Behind them, the dunes of the Namib meet the Atlantic.
Fortunately, there is enough time for a 4x4 tour to Sandwich Harbour. More adventurous travellers can explore the dunes by quad bike and experience them while sandboarding.

The Namib is considered the oldest desert in the world and is one of the few coastal deserts. At Sandwich Harbour, its dunes reach right down to the Atlantic – an absolute natural phenomenon.
Safari along the legendary Etosha salt pan with unforgettable wildlife encounters.
Undisputedly the safari highlight of your journey: together with an experienced ranger, you head out in an open safari vehicle and encounter elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and, with a little luck, even lions in their natural habitat. By combining Etosha National Park with private safari reserves, you experience safari from different perspectives – with enough time for exciting wildlife encounters day after day.

Etosha National Park is one of Africa’s best-known safari areas. The seemingly endless Etosha salt pan and the many waterholes create ideal conditions for unforgettable wildlife sightings.

Your Namibia journey at a glance
12–14 days, six very different regions and still no feeling of constantly having to move on. This route is deliberately designed so that you usually stay two nights in one place. That leaves time to arrive, explore and enjoy.
STAGE 1 – WINDHOEK
Your Namibia journey begins gently in Windhoek. After your flight, the focus is simply on arriving, collecting your rental vehicle and settling into the rhythm of the days ahead.
STAGE 2 – NAMIB DESERT
Through the Naukluft Mountains you head into the Namib. Two nights give you enough time for the region’s great highlight: a guided tour to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, including a walk through the famous red dunes. Depending on the final itinerary, there may also be time for Sesriem Canyon.
STAGE 3 – SWAKOPMUND & WALVIS BAY
From the desert you travel to the Atlantic. A boat tour off Walvis Bay is part of this journey for us. The rest of your time is yours to shape – perhaps with Sandwich Harbour, quad biking, sandboarding, kayaking or a Little Five dune tour.
STAGE 4 – DAMARALAND
Namibia becomes even quieter here. Two nights in Damaraland give you time to truly absorb this remarkable landscape. Depending on the lodge, the region and the season, you can head out with a guide in search of the desert-adapted elephants. By sunset, you may understand why this is one of my personal favourite places in Namibia.
STAGE 5 – ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK & PRIVATE SAFARI RESERVE
Now the safari highlight of your journey begins. The route enters Etosha from the south, crosses the national park and continues east, combining Etosha with private safari reserves. On game drives with experienced rangers in open safari vehicles, you have plenty of time for intensive wildlife encounters.
STAGE 6 – WATERBERG
After the safari, you continue towards Waterberg. Here you can slow the pace again for the final days of the journey, go hiking or – depending on the exact itinerary – add special experiences such as rhino tracking on foot. From here, you return to Windhoek.

How a road trip becomes
A RELAXED JOURNEY
Namibia is vast – which is exactly why good planning matters. We do not try to pack as many stops as possible into your journey. What matters is experiencing the special highlight regions while still having enough time for each of them.
That is why you usually stay two nights in one place on this route. On driving days, you can start after a relaxed breakfast and normally reach your next lodge by early afternoon. There is time to settle in, enjoy a first activity or simply spend a few hours by the pool looking out across the landscape.
The following day belongs entirely to the region: a guided desert tour, a boat trip, the desert-adapted elephants or a safari with your ranger.
You drive yourself – but you are never left on your own along the way.
We plan your route, select the right lodges and activities and book the travel services you want. Your travel documents contain everything important, so there is no further organisation for you to handle once you are on the road.
At the lodges, you are welcomed personally, and experienced guides and rangers take care of the booked experiences. We also remain available throughout your journey and stay with you in the background.
You keep the freedom of a self-drive journey while being able to travel with confidence because the important parts of your trip have already been thought through, booked and prepared.

Is Namibia suitable for a first journey to Africa?
Yes. That is exactly why we developed this journey for first-time Africa travellers. Namibia combines spectacular nature and safari with a way of travelling that gives you a great deal of independence. The route is straightforward, we prepare the journey in full and book the services you want. During the booked activities, experienced guides and rangers look after you – and we remain available in the background throughout your trip.
Is self-driving in Namibia difficult?
For many travellers, this is one of the biggest uncertainties before their first Namibia journey. In reality, Namibia is one of Africa’s best self-drive destinations – and driving yourself is, for me, an important part of the experience.
You do not have to drive every day, and we deliberately plan the individual stages so they are not too long. The roads are a mix of tar and well-drivable gravel roads. Navigation is usually straightforward: very little traffic, few turns and a lot of open landscape. We also provide detailed driving directions for every accommodation. Google Maps and GPS work perfectly well as additional navigation tools.
Before you travel, we also go through the specifics of your self-drive journey with you personally in a Zoom travel-preparation meeting. That way you know what to expect and can begin your Namibia journey well prepared.
How long should I allow for this Namibia journey?
We recommend 12–14 days. That leaves enough time for the key stages without turning the trip into a daily change of accommodation.
If you have more time, we recommend additional stages – especially the Kalahari at the beginning of the journey or the still relatively unknown west of Etosha National Park.
When is the best time to travel to Namibia?
This journey is possible year-round. Peak season is between June and September and therefore also overlaps with the German summer holidays.
Namibia is both a desert country and, for the most part, a highland country. During the Namibian winter, days are often pleasantly warm, while nights can cool down considerably because of the altitude and desert climate. The Namibian summer from December to March is hotter and coincides with the rainy season.
Does Namibia’s rainy season mean lots of rain?
Namibia is one of the driest countries in the world. ‘Rainy season’ therefore does not mean constant rain; it is simply the time of year when rainfall can occur at all.
In a desert country, rain can transform the landscape completely. Experiencing rain in the Namib can therefore be something very special.
Why does Namibia feel so empty and vast?
Namibia is roughly two and a half times the size of Germany, yet has only around two and a half million inhabitants. That works out at roughly three people per square kilometre.
This low population density shapes the entire travel experience: long horizons, little traffic, very little settlement and a sense of quiet that is hard to find in Europe. For me, that vastness – paired with spectacular landscapes and scenery – is one of the most beautiful parts of travelling through Namibia.
How warm or cold does it get in Namibia?
That depends heavily on the season and the region. Much of Namibia lies at roughly 800 to 1,700 metres above sea level, so temperatures can differ significantly between day and night.
During the Namibian winter, daytime temperatures around 25 °C can feel wonderfully pleasant, while nights can become much cooler. In summer, temperatures can rise to around 40 °C. Especially in the desert, this contrast between warm days and cool evenings is part of the character of the country.
Does Etosha National Park have the Big Five?
No. Etosha is Big Four country because buffalo do not occur there due to the dry conditions.
That makes the safari no less exciting. Elephants, rhinos, lions and, with a little luck, leopards are part of the wildlife, alongside giraffes, zebras, antelope and many other species. The waterholes and open landscapes around the vast salt pan create excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Yes. The route shown here is our recommendation for a first Namibia journey, not a fixed travel package.
Journey length, lodges, activities and individual stages can all be adapted to your wishes. You can also combine elements from the different Collections. If you have more time or already have Africa experience, we can expand the route or shift the emphasis accordingly.
